Valletta 2018’s opera season includes a challenging new operatic work by Maltese composer, Mario Sammut. Aħna Refuġjati is Sammut’s first operatic venture after working on multiple international and local media projects. The opera will include musical direction by Richard Merrill Brown and a libretto by Mario Philip Azzopardi.
In recounting the struggles of a family attempting to escape their war-torn country, the opera addresses timely concerns in the Euro-Mediterranean region, the human cost of large-scale migration and the universal theme of loss as a result of political convenience, racism and prejudice.
The opera will be held on the 31st August and the 2nd September 2018 at The Granaries in Floriana. Buy your tickets below and participate in a draw where you will be in the chance to win an iPhoneX. Draw closes on the 31st July!
A new operatic work scripted entirely in Maltese (with surtitles in English and Maltese) recounts the struggles of a family attempting to escape their war-torn country.
Political convenience, racism and prejudice are the central themes of this original work. These issues are manifested on stage thanks to the impeccable talent of the cast, which includes Miriam Gauci, Clare Ghigo, Joseph Zammit, José Hernández Pastor, Ruth Sammut Casingena and Federica Falzon, to name a few.
