Malta The Oratory of St.Francis Church Repubic Street

Chanson d’Amour The successful weekly lunchtime concert series at the Oratory of St. Francis in Republic Street, Valletta will continue on Tuesday 23 February 2016 at 12:30pm. The regular performances present varied performers and musicians, offering sparkling and stimulating classical music on a weekly basis. Mezzo Soprano Vanessa Camenzuli is a talented artist who is making a name for herself in Malta for her clear and beautiful voice. She will be giving a recital of evergreen and romantic arias written by some of the world’s best-loved composers. The mezzo soprano will be singing the endearing song by Pergolesi Se Tu M'ami, se Sospiri, Mozart’s “Torna di Tito a Lato” from Clemenza di Tito and Gluck’s “O Del Mio Dolce Ardor” from Paride ed Elena. The recital will continue with more charming songs by French composers, namely Massenet’s “Va! Laisse Couler Mes Larmes” from Werther and two songs by Fauré “Après un Rêve” and “Chanson D'amour”. Ms. Camenzuli will conclude the recital with Debussy’s “Romance/ Les Cloches” from Deux Romances and Gounod’s “Faites-Lui Mes Aveux” from Faust. Ms. Camenzuli will be accompanied by the pianist Sofia Narmania, a gifted accompanist who will also be performing two solo piano works. Vanessa Camenzuli currently trains with Maltese Soprano Miriam Cauchi. In the past she has studied privately with mezzo soprano Anne Howells in London, UK as well as with Juliette Bisazza, Denise Mulholland and Gillian Zammit. She forms part of the Teatru Manoel Youth Opera with which she has recently played the role of Second Witch in Purcell’s opera Dido & Aeneas. Her other on-stage operatic performances include Hansel & Gretel (Mother), roles in The Old Befana and The Little Mermaid and chorus parts in Semele, Aleko & Clemenza di Tito. In 2011 Vanessa debuted with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra with a solo in the annual concert Movie Spectacular. That same year she performed with the young opera group ‘Minigig’ that performed outdoors in various localities. She has also sung solo in various concerts in Malta and Gozo. Vanessa has participated in various vocal master classes, including one with Laura Sarti. She studied piano for over 15 years obtaining her grade 8 and MATSEC Music A-level, and trained with Lucia Micallef, Rosetta de Battista and Karen Briscoe-White. One of Vanessa’s all time passions is teaching which she has done for over 8 years now. After being a student at Masquerade Theatre Arts school, where she obtained her grade 8 in Character Study, she went on to teach singing to groups as well as individuals. Vanessa also taught music and drama at Chiswick House School. Vanessa has a Psychology (Hons) Degree and currently works full time at Vodafone Malta as Corporate Affairs Executive. The venue, the baroque Oratory, was originally the friars’ refectory. Over the years, it had been transformed into an oratory, hence it is beautifully adorned by magnificent baroque paintings, an elaborate gilded altarpiece and monks’ benches. The lunchtime concerts are a wonderful way to visit and enjoy the beautiful chapel. The events are fund raising events for the Franciscan Church, which is undergoing extensive structural restoration. Tickets for the lunchtime concerts, costing 8 euro, can be obtained from the venue itself half an hour before the concert begins.
