Il Barbiere di Siviglia will be the highlight of Gaulitana: A Festival of Music (March 27-April 24). The full-scale production of Rossini’s masterpiece will celebrate the bicentenary of the opera’s premiere. The director and set-designer is Enrico Castiglione, from the Taormina Festival, with costumes designed by Sonia Cammarata. Colin Attard will be at the helm of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and the Gaulitanus Choir. The international cast will include Maltese Nico Darmanin, finalist at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2015, who will feature in his operatic debut on his home soil after successfully interpreting the role at the Welsh National Opera. The opera performance, preceded by a pre-opera talk, will be part of an OPERA+ Weekend that will also feature Michael Laus in a piano recital on Friday evening, a Wine&Music by the Gaudos Violin Duo on Saturday, and a lunchtime concert with Tortorelli-Meluso Duo and vocal finale by Miriam Cauchi and an instrumental ensemble on Sunday. Gaulitana is supported by Arts Council Malta and is a recipient of the prestigious EFFE Label (Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe).
