Description
Palazzo Falson is the second oldest building in Mdina, Malta’s former capital. Originally called “Palazzo Cumbo-Navarra,” “Casa dei Castelletti,” and “The Norman House,” it reopened in May 2007 following restoration by the Maltese Heritage Foundation.
Dating back to the early 13th century, this two-storey medieval palace follows Sicilian architectural styles and was built as a noble family residence. The rooms surround an internal courtyard, with the noble floor containing the original living quarters. The oldest section lies at the rear of the courtyard.
In the early 16th century, the palace was inherited by Vice Admiral Michele Falson, Head of the Town Council. After Malta was granted to the Knights of St. John, the first Grand Master in Malta, Philippe Villiers de L’Isle Adam, was hosted here in 1530 after taking possession of Mdina.
The last owner, Captain Olof Frederick Gollcher O.B.E. (1889–1962), was a researcher, artist, philanthropist, and collector. His extensive collection of objets d’art and historical items is now exhibited throughout the house museum, one of Malta’s leading cultural attractions.
The museum’s collection features over 3,500 objects organized into 45 collections displayed in 17 rooms. It includes paintings, silver, furniture, jewellery, Oriental rugs, armoury, and a library with more than 4,500 books and valuable manuscripts. Notable artists represented include Mattia Preti, Jusepe de Ribera, Jakob-Ferdinand Voet, Charles Beale, and Juriaen van Streeck.
The upper-floor cafeteria terrace offers views over Mdina and its surroundings.
