Pretty Bay

Pretty Bay is the only extensive sandy beach in the south of Malta. Actually, it was originally a rocky coast until the bay was filled with sand collected from the seabed during extensive works at the nearby Freeport container terminal. Located in Birzebbugia, a small up-and-coming seaside resort, today the beach is very popular with locals from the surrounding areas.

This bay is a crowd puller for a variety of reasons. The sandy beach is wide and deep enough to accommodate both families who are looking for a relaxing spot and for the more energetic generation and their beach sports activities. A convenient strip adjacent to the beach is dotted with a number of restaurants, bars, cafes, shops and kiosks. The sea is usually pleasant here and an ideal bathing place for all age groups and swimmers. There is also a rocky shore around St. George’s Bay (situated just outside Pretty Bay and not to be confused with its namesake in St. Julian’s) which is ideal for sun bathing and snorkelling.

The one thing that Pretty Bay lacks is the rugged natural surroundings of the charming beaches of the north of Malta. This is somewhat compounded by the imposing port located just across from the bay. However, if you are staying in the area or want to combine some swimming with your visit to the temples and caves situated in the south of the island, this is certainly an ideal option.
