Description
Valletta Resounds is a 40-minute site-specific performance combining Caravaggio’s masterpiece, The Beheading of St John the Baptist, with classical music and theatre in Valletta’s St. John's Co-Cathedral. The concert features critically acclaimed Maltese musicians under the direction of Jacob Portelli, performing works by Baroque composers such as Handel and Bach alongside sacred Maltese compositions by Francesco Azzopardi.
Performances are sung by Malta’s leading sopranos—Dorothy Bezzina, Hannah Tong, and Dorothy Baldacchino—accompanied by Baroque harp, violin, cello, and psaltery. The experience is narrated by actor Jeremy Grech as the character Fra Bartolomeo, providing historical context about the Oratory. The concert starts at 18:30, with cathedral access from 18:00 for a 30-minute visit via the main door on St John Street. Timings may vary on different dates.
An optional VIP package includes an exclusive guided tour of the Cathedral before the concert, led by a professional English-speaking guide. This offers a quieter, in-depth exploration of Malta’s most visited historic church along with front-row concert seating.
