Villa Bologna - Heritage House and Gardens

Malta

History and Culture Historic Sites

Villa Bologna is an 18th century stately home surrounded by one of the most beautiful gardens in Malta. The villa has been lived in by successive generations of the family that built it. In the 19th century it was inherited by Lord Strickland who later became Prime Minister of Malta. It is now lived in by his grandson, Gerald de Trafford and his family.

Located in the old village of Attard in the centre of Malta, Villa Bologna is a gem waiting to be discovered. The Villa is on St Anthony's Street, next door to the President's Kitchen Garden and San Anton Palace.

These magical baroque and turn of the century Mediterranean gardens retain a genuine old world charm. Built in 1745 and spread over 8 acres, they include fountains, ponds, vine covered pergolas, citrus orchards, vegetable gardens and formal gardens - all kept to their original enchanting beauty and without any unnecessary renovations. A leisurely stroll around the estate will transport you to a bygone era far removed from the normal fast paced tourist traps.

The gardens are open to the public and a visit includes a short film about the history and plans for Villa Bologna followed by a visual and audio guide on a tablet that takes you on a lovely tour of the spacious grounds. You will also be pleased to find 'Ceramika Maltija' at Villa Bologna. This is Malta's oldest ceramic workshop and a place where quality hand painted earthenware can be bought.

As they say, a picture says a thousand words... so make sure to browse through the virtual tour on this page for a flavour of what Villa Bologna has to offer.
