MedJam18

Mediterranean Jamboree 2018

Wednesday 1 August to Wednesday 8 August at 00:00 until 00:00
Malta c/o The Scout Association of Malta and the Malta Girl Guides Association Congreve-Bernard Memorial Hall Floriana

The Scout Association of Malta and the Malta Girl Guides Association will be organizing the first ever Mediterranean Jamboree in the summer of 2018. This will run from the 1st to the 8th of August. This event will be open for scouts and guides between the ages of 11 to 16 and it has the full support of the European Scout Region of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement (WOSM) and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS).

It is expected that around 2,000 scouts and guides coming from different countries will participate in this massive event. The participants will be divided into communities, with whom they will participate by bridging their cultures and discovering the cross roads while being in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea.

Both associations are doing their utmost to give the participants the experience a lifetime. We will be providing exposure to what scouting and guiding activities could offer and an opportunity for them to discover Malta - a small island with great history, attractions and friendly people.

Motto – Bridging Cultures

MedJam18 will focus on the personal development of the participating scouts and guides.  It will create an environment in which they can exchange their experiences, knowledge and ideas. These exchanges will bridge the cultures together and encourage participants to enhance fundamental values, whilst enjoying themselves in a wonderful environment.

Theme – Meeting at the Cross Road

Malta is considered as the gem of the Mediterranean, located in the centre of the waters. The strategic position of Malta; also known as a stepping stone for large countries;  will surly create the perfect condition to bring together scouts and guides from various counties which surround the Mediterranean Sea and beyond.  Whichever direction one may be coming from; North, South, East or West, the cross road will be Malta.

Venue – Ghajn Tuffieha National Campsite

The Ghajn Tuffieha Campsite is the Scout Association’s official campsite and it is run by volunteers within the same Association. It is spread over nearly 16 acres of land in the vicinity of some of the most scenic Northern parts of Malta.

At the campsite, you have the opportunity to camp in a natural environment while a stone's throw away is one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in Malta. The campsite is also located on a bus route and has a number of restaurants close by.

Facilities include over 20 camping plots each served with water and electricity, an open-air Greek theatre and a car park and ablution blocks with toilets and showers.

Malta

Malta is an archipelago located in the centre of the Mediterranean between Sicily and the North African coast. It's a nation known for historic sites related to a succession of rulers including the Romans, Moors, Knights of Saint John, French and British. It has numerous fortresses, bastions, megalithic temples and a subterranean complex of halls and burial chambers dating to circa 4000 B.C.

Organisation

The organising committee is composed of members from both The Scout Association of Malta and the Malta Girl Guides Association with different backgrounds and disciplines.

The team is composed of persons with a lot of international experience as well as newcomers, each member having their own speciality.

The Scout Association of Malta

Founded in 1908, The Scout Association of Malta has always maintained a high and respectable scouting tradition. Its leaders and members are committed to further the ideals of scouting in line with those as traditionally established by the Founder, Lord Baden Powell and as further developed by the World Scout Movement. The Association is a forward looking organisation that enjoys great respect both locally and internationally. The Scout Association of Malta is a member of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement as well as a member of the European Scout Region.

The Malta Girl Guides Association

For over 90 years, the Malta Girl Guides Association has been enabling girls and young women to develop to their fullest potential as responsible citizens. The world of Girl Guiding is like no other… we provide a safe place where girls can be themselves, develop personally and socially, but most of all, have fun while doing so.

Through a quality interactive programme we give our members and volunteers, the chance to develop a sound character, life skills, leadership skills, and a positive sense of direction while always opening up their world to new opportunities both locally and abroad. We promote confidence, commitment and determination; we have seen members grow more confident, become more outgoing and build true friendships through their Guiding Journey with our Association and we hope to do so for all of our members, present and future.

As an association, the MGG is a full member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, forming part of 10 million members worldwide.

Food Health and Safety

During MedJam18 we will have the standard facilities for first aid and primary care. A form of interreligious service will be provided as well.

Foreign participants will be teamed with local scouts and will be asked to prepare meals and cook for themselves. Campfires and fires to cook are allowed but limited. Food will be distributed to the leaders and they will be in charge to ensure correct distribution. Staff will be catered for in a separate area. Food will be safe, clean and fresh, which will be safeguarded by several measures to uphold the expected standards. The menu will obviously include some Maltese recipes.

MedJam18 will be 100% drugs and alcohol free, and the use of tobacco, although discouraged, will be allowed only for the staff at a designated area.

Sustainability

Garbage will be separated in order to recycle resources wisely. The use of disposables will be severely limited.

International Service Team

International Service Team (‘IST’) members are welcome from the ages of 18 years and over and will be fully integrated into the national staff teams. The working language will be English. There will be a variety of tasks that need to be carried out and sufficient time will be given to the staff to spend on socializing, enjoying the activities and developing partnerships. Additionally, a separate program for the ISTs will be developed.

Participating Fees

The fees will be the basis for national scouting organisations (NSO’s) and member organisations (MO’s). Fees will charged to individual participants. Various schemes will be announced later on to reduce the burden of a full payment.

In order to encourage more scouts and guides to attend and in order to practice solidarity, MedJam18 fees are categorised, based on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of each country. The categorisation of the countries can be found here.

Category A         € 220

Category B         € 240

Category C         € 260

Category D         € 280

Category E         € 300

Costs

The participating fee covers all direct and indirect costs for program, activities, food, drinking water, accommodation and transport during the event.

Team Leaders, Head of Contingents and International Service Team

The International Service Team, Head of Contingents, Leaders and the National Service Team members are important for MedJam18 and its success. Participation fee for ISTs, Head of Contingent and Leaders is set at € 200. Please keep in mind that there will be a limit to the number of Leaders per contingent.
