Riviera Bay (Ghajn Tuffieha)
Ghajn Tuffieha (Apple’s Eye in Maltese) is the smaller and less frequented sister of the neighbouring Golden Bay. The long flight of steps (they number nearly 200 in all) that need to be tackled in order to reach this beach have kept an unspoilt rural atmosphere to it. It is a favourite with locals looking to escape the hustle and bustle of more popular touristy beaches. However, families with younger children or excess gear usually stay away due to the access difficulties.
The view from the beach is fantastic with a rugged coastline and a strangely shaped flat promontory majestically standing on one side. The hillside behind the beach is also a designated natural park. Unfortunately, the Ghajn Tuffieha bay has been subjected to natural erosion and the Gaia foundation, responsible for its upkeep, have planted Tamarisk and Samphire to try to prevent further attrition of this beautiful spot.
The actual beach has a nice moderate stretch of fine sand and the Mediterranean water here is usually clean and clear, even though residues from the surrounding clay cliffs can sometimes cause the sea to get murky. The sea is generally calm and does not get deep for a good tract. However, extra care needs to be taken due to occasional underwater currents especially when the wind is to the north-west. A red flag is posted when it is deemed unsafe to swim outside of the initial shallow waters.
People in the know are the ones to stay on just that little bit longer than the rest at Ghajn Tuffieha...simply to gaze at the priceless sunsets that can be enjoyed from this evocative spot.
